Insights from Historical Artwork

Two fighters each clearly employing stepping footwork. Both are in mail armor with plate on their lower legs only, the fighter on the left holds his small shield heater in a buckler-like manner high close to the face, the one of the right keeps his curved heater shield out from the body at chin. Both appear to be employing thrusts form their tapering single-hand blades.
